A new manager has been welcomed to Business Central by colleagues and clients. Nicole Johnstone started in May 2026 as the Centre Manager, working across both Innovation Central and Business Central. We caught up with Nicole to find out more about what drew her to Darlington Workspace.
Nicole’s experience ranges from customer-facing night shifts on reception in a hotel to an event administrator; all developing key skills that were needed for her role here at Darlington Workspace.
“I think I was ready for a change in my career. And when I was looking, I came across this role,” said Nicole Johnstone, Centre Manager. “It’s different to the roles I would usually apply for, but it’s a combination of the favourite bits of every job I’ve ever had rolled into one.”
Since starting in the position, Nicole has had to learn about how both sites are operated, meet new clients and get to know her colleagues.
“I was so impressed with how light and open everything was; it looked really good, and everyone that I spoke to was just so friendly.
“It has been so easy, and the staff have all been so patient because I have been asking so many questions!
Not only has Nicole had to learn the ins-and-outs of the role, but she has also been getting to know the tenants across both sites.
“When I first started, everyone was so kind. Everyone was coming to speak to me and introduce themselves.
“I remember people from the stories that they’re sharing with me. I find it easier that way because that’s the person that has got their new puppy; that is the person that’s just been on holiday to ‘that place’.”
Outside of work, Nicole has creative interests. “I’ve got a Cricut machine. I love making little presents. According to Nicole, she is the “least creative, creative person that you would ever meet!
“I actually turned some text into a picture so I could edit an order of service for a family member. I took the last card that she wrote, where she signed her name and how she always signed the card off. So, the machine handwrote her order of service for her- it was really cool.”
It has been a busy few months, which have already come with some memorable moments for Nicole. We asked if any days stood out to her.
“I think on day two, it was Hubspoke Media’s tenth anniversary,” said Nicole “ I made some little balloons on my Cricut and it made me feel like I was immediately contributing; it was really well received by the client.
“There are ups and downs in every job; Dan and Vanessa have been incredible, especially when I am so new to the role, and I had so much to learn. Now that I am a few months in, I certainly feel like I am settling into the role.”
Nicole has leaned on her experience as an events administrator and contributed to the planning of this year’s “A Day at the Races” summer BBQ for clients and leading the way for organising the tenant Christmas party.
Nicole is excited about attending networking events and expos in the area on behalf of Darlington Workspace. When asked if there was anything she was looking forward to, Nicole said: “I’m excited to meet everyone. I want to work my way around and introduce myself. I find it so interesting because there are so many different businesses and people at different stages in their growth.”
