Raising the flag to celebrate our Armed Forces

Armed Forces Day

Come and join us as we celebrate our Armed Forces personnel, past and present, and thank them for all that they do.

We’re encouraging individuals, schools, community groups and businesses to join in the celebrations as we host a special Raising the Flag ceremony in the Market Square on Friday 23 June to mark Reserves Day (21 June) and Armed Forces Day (24 June).

It’s a chance to say thank you and show our support to all those who make up our Armed Forces, service families, veterans and cadets.

Organised by the council, the celebrations will be led by the Mayor of Darlington Cllr Jan Cossins with invitations sent to all councillors, other civic dignitaries and representatives of the military.

The Mayor said: “This is a chance for us to pay tribute and say thanks to all those who have served with our Armed Forces, past and present.

“It’s a great honour for me to be part of this event which recognises their efforts and sacrifices, and I hope as many people as possible will join us in the Market Square.”

Cllr Amanda Riley, cabinet member for stronger communities, added: “We’re delighted to once again be able to raise the flag in tribute to our armed forces and look forward to welcoming as many local residents, schoolchildren, businesses, community groups and organisations to take part in this special ceremony.”

Anyone who wishes to attend is asked to be at the Market Square before 10.10am. A short parade of representatives from the Armed Forces, military associations and civic guests will leave the Town Hall at 10.15am to make its way to the Market Square where the Raise the Flag ceremony will take place.
